Implementation of ‘Physics in Pictures’ (SOI-MT-505)

Introduction

This implementation involved two mixed-ability Physics classes, each comprising 12 male students aged 14 to 15 in a school in Malta. Throughout this activity, the students got acquainted with the Europeana Collections, and they had to prepare a presentation using pictures of a topic covered this scholastic year. The activity took place over two lessons of forty minutes each. This is the story of implementing the learning scenario Physics in Pictures.

Implementation

Preparation of work

The decision was to incorporate a collaborative activity into a project using Microsoft PowerPoint. The students were asked to divide into groups of three. In the initial lesson, they were asked to take a laptop in the ICT lab and look for pictures related to a physics topic covered throughout this academic year in the Europeana galleries. The students were asked to save their work on a pen drive so that they could continue their work at home. The week after, the students delivered a short presentation to their classmates on the chosen topic, revising it using pictures.

Presentation of work

Following the presentation, the students could ask questions and give constructive feedback. The participants demonstrated mutual appreciation for one another’s work and ideas, and when deemed essential, they offered suggestions to enhance the quality of the presentation. This was also an opportune moment to elucidate the acquired concepts, address any potential misunderstandings, and enhance the scientific concepts of the chosen topic.

Dissemination of work

Following the presentation, the students uploaded their work on the general channel of their class team on MS Teams to help the other students in their revision.

Outcomes

This SOI focuses on engaging students with weaker academic abilities by promoting the use of images related to physics topics. This approach enhances comprehension and 21st-century skills like creativity, collaboration, visual literacy, and technology use. The students’ enthusiasm helped me acquire the knowledge and skills to use digital resources effectively in project-based learning.
