« Ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Madrid on December 2-13 (English – COP25), the European Parliament on Thursday adopted a resolution declaring a climate and environmental emergency in Europe and around the world. Deputies also tasked the European Commission to ensure full coordination of all relevant legislative and budgetary proposals with tasks related to efforts to limit global warming below 1.5 °C, » the document reads.
In a separate resolution, the European Parliament called on the EU to present a strategy for achieving climate neutrality as soon as possible, by 2050 at the latest, for its inclusion in the UN Convention on Climate Change. MEPs also called on the new president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to include the goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 55% by 2030 in the provisions of the so-called European Green Deal.
MEPs emphasized the need to bring key sectors of the European economy, such as maritime and aviation transportation, into compliance with the stated goals for reducing harmful emissions into the atmosphere.
MEPs emphasized that EU countries should at least double their own contributions to the international Green Climate Fund. Today, EU member states are already the largest providers of budget spending for climate goals, so the EU budget must fully comply with its international commitments in this area.
The MPs also noted that contributions from developed countries fell short of the collectively agreed target of US$100 billion per year by 2020.
Another important provision of the document is a call to all EU countries to immediately eliminate all direct and indirect subsidies in the field of using conventional carbon fuels by 2020.
