An investigation is being carried out following the stabbing of an 11-year-old girl and her mother in Leicester Square, central London.
The incident took place on the morning of august 12th in a busy part of the British capital.
A girl, aged 11, was taken to hospital with stabbing injuries. According to the police, she is seriously injured and will require further treatment, but her condition is not life threatening. Her mother, aged 34, also suffered minor injuries.
A 32-year-old man was arrested at the scene. Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack.
“An urgent investigation is now ongoing and detectives are working to establish the details around exactly what happened. At this stage we don’t believe the suspect and the victims were known to each other,” says Christina Jessah, a Detective Chief Superintendent in charge of policing for Westminster.
A spokesperson for Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, said: “The Mayor’s thoughts are with the mother and daughter who were victims of a horrific attack that took place in central London earlier today. An 11-year-old girl is seriously injured and remains in hospital, whilst a man has been arrested and is in custody. The Mayor is in touch with senior Met officers and is receiving regular updates on this incident.”
Knife crime offences in London recorded by the Metropolitan Police rose year on year in the latest figures released back in April.

Of the 49,489 knife crime offences recorded in England and Wales in 2023, 29% were by the Metropolitan Police, a higher proportion than any other force.
