Irish motorbike rider Louis O’Regan died Sunday after a crash at the qualifiers of the Manx Grand Prix, race organizers said. He was 43.
O’Regan was involved in a crash at Kate’s Cottage during the opening session, organizers said in a statement.
“Louis, an Irishman who lived in Didcot, England, was an experienced competitor at the Manx Grand Prix having made his debut in the 2013 Newcomers A Race, finishing 12th. He recorded his personal best lap speed in the 2019 Junior Race, lapping at an average speed of 114.7mph,” the statement said.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Louis’s partner Sarah, his family, loved ones, and friends.”
In a separate statement posted on X, the Manx Grand Prix also confirmed O’Regan’s death.
“It is with great sadness that we can confirm the loss of Louis O’Regan following an incident in today’s qualifying session,” the post said.
The annual race is on the Isle of Man, in the Irish sea, between Great Britain and Ireland. This year’s event began Sunday and ends Aug. 26, according to race officials.
