David Lynch’s children invite fans to ‘worldwide group meditation’ to honour director’s legacy

David Lynch’s children – Jennifer, Austin, Riley and Lula Lynch – have invited mourning fans to join in a 10-minute worldwide group session today to “meditate, reflect, and send positivity into the universe.”

Today would have been director David Lynch’s 79th birthday and to honour his legacy, his children have invited fans of the late artist to a “worldwide group meditation”.

“David Lynch, our beloved dad, was a guiding light of creativity, love, and peace,” they wrote on Facebook.

“On Monday, January 20th – what would have been his 79th birthday – we invite you all to join us in a worldwide group meditation at 12:00pm NOON PST for 10 minutes.”

For all you European fans, that’s 9pm CET, and the 10-minute session will – rather appropriately – overlap with the Trump inauguration.

“Let us come together, wherever we are, to honor his legacy by spreading peace and love across the world. Please take this time to meditate, reflect, and send positivity into the universe. Thank you for being part of this celebration of his life.”

The co-creator of Twin Peaks and the director of Blue Velvet, Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive was a longtime practitioner of Transcendental Meditation (TM) – silent meditation developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It is a non-religious method that promotes relaxed awareness, stress relief and self-development. The most widely practiced form of TM includes silently repeating a mantra while sitting with your eyes closed.

Lynch began Transcendental Meditation in 1973 and wrote on his website that it enabled him to access to “pure consciousness” and gave him “effortless access to unlimited reserves of energy, creativity and happiness deep within”.

David Lynch frequently spoke about his practice of TM, and even wrote a book “Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity” on the subject.

Other famous pop-culture and artistic figures that practice TM include Hugh Jackman, Tom Hanks, Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, Martin Scorsese and Nick Cave.

The director, who revealed his emphysema diagnosis last year, died last Thursday. He was forced to relocate from his house in Los Angeles due to the wildfires and died shortly afterwards.

In our tribute to the director, we wrote that he “opened these unique cinematic portals to strange places” and that he leaves “a unique and amazing body of work that will continue to thrill and inspire countless creatives and movie lovers.”

Read the full tribute here.

So, take time today at 9pm CET, for 10 minutes, to honour a unique artistic talent who promoted peace-creating meditation as a way to block out the ills of the modern world.

Or as Lynch told The Guardian last year: “Sublime eternal love is a possibility for human beings, and every human being should know that – it exists within each one of us.”
