Indian Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan was recovering in hospital on Thursday after being stabbed repeatedly by an intruder at his home in Mumbai overnight.

The 54-year-old actor underwent surgery after suffering six stab wounds in the attack, including two deep cuts in his back, according to doctors at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital.

Doctor Nitin Dange told reporters after the operation that Khan had “sustained a major injury to the thoracic spinal cord due to a lodged knife in the spine”.

“Surgery was performed to remove the knife and also repair the leaking spinal fluid,” he added.

Khan’s team said in a statement he was “out of danger” following the surgery.

“He is currently in recovery and the doctors are monitoring his progress,” his team said.

The intruder barged into Khan’s house in the early hours of Thursday morning and fled after stabbing the actor, according to police in Mumbai. A female employee at Khan’s home was also injured during the attack and was being treated, they said.

Police said they have identified the attacker and launched a search for him.

Khan’s team said it was a case of “attempted burglary” but did not provide more details.

The Bollywood legend, who is also a movie producer, has been featured in about 70 films and television series. He is the son of former Indian cricket captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore.
