Too many group chats and emails? Here are the most overwhelmed in Europe


Communicating – whether online or in person – takes up at least half of a working day for millions of EU workers, says Eurostat.

If your inbox and group chats are bursting after the Christmas break, you’re probably not alone.

Spending at least half of the time at work on internal and external communications is the norm for 46% of workers in the European Union.

The most overwhelmed are the Maltese, French and Austrians, while the lowest percentages were reported in Slovakia, Greece and Latvia.

Women, Gen Zs and millennials spend most time in communications

Women tend to communicate more than men at work, as 51.5% of them use at least half of their time for internal and external communications, compared to 43% of male employees.

Among male workers, millennials (30-44 years old) are the most engaged in communications, with 45% spending at least half their time on it.

On the other hand, the most engaged (56%) age group among female workers are GenZs.

Which professions take up most time in communication tasks?

In general, finance and insurance professionals spend the most time communicating (58.5%), followed by those in education (56.4%) and hospitality(55.5%).

Agriculture, forestry and fishing are by far the sector with the lowest rate (19.3%).
