The main artefact stolen from the Drents museum was the golden helmet of Cotofenesti, which was on loan from the National History Museum of Romania.

Thieves set off an explosion to gain entry into the Drents museum in the city of Assen, allowing them to steal several artefacts from a major exhibition called “Dacia – Empire of Gold and Silver.”

According to the police, the museum was hit by a heavy explosion on Saturday morning which destroyed a car, shattered windows and damaged the building.

The golden helmet of Cotofenesti from c.450 BC is considered a masterpiece of Thracian-Getic goldsmithing art. It was one of the main highlights at the exhibition, which has now closed.

It also featured over 600 gold and silver objects from at least 15 museums across Romania. The Dacian empire flourished in present-day Romania and the country’s national museum has now lost some of its major exhibits.

“This is a dark day for the Drents Museum in Assen and the National History Museum of Romania in Bucharest,” the General director of the Drents Museum, Harry Tupan, said.

“In its 170-year existence, there has never been such a major incident. It also gives us enormous sadness towards our colleagues in Romania.”

The police say they have launched an investigation.
